Article Title: Telecoast pulls profit from dot-com ruins; by Frank Nelson, SB News Press. Edited version.
In January 2002 Mike Ross saw an opportunity for buying and selling telecommunications equipment and established Santa Barbara based Telecoast Communications.

In the early stages we didn’t find a lot of encouragement or support, recalls Mr. Clayton, one of the companies early stage investors. “We started in the absolute bottom of the telecom decline and everyone we spoke with tried to discourage us.”

However, Mr. Ross said Telecoast forged ahead and although the company began actively prospecting for sales only in April of this year, it is already making a profit.

Projected revenue this year is about 1.5 million said Mr. Ross adding that the target and projected figure for 2003 is 5 million.

Based on Coast Village Road, Telecoast trades in switches, routers, access servers and a wide range of networking hardware, besides offering asset recovery and de-installation services.

Including partner Mark Welton and senior sales executive Dave Boss the company has grown to six employees. Telecoast hopes to add an additional group of seasoned sales executives over the next year

The company trumpets its goal of saving customers of Telecoast 50 to 80 percent off published manufacture list pricing, and has already built up a solid base of around 150 clients, including some in the U.K. and Australia.

Telecoast buys, sells and trades new and refurbished networking equipment, specializing in widely used Cisco products along with respected names such as Juniper, Foundry, Extreme and Redback. Telecoast knows it has to compete with big companies like Goleta-based Somera. Executives believe Telecoast has an edge by offering outstanding customer service combined with access to a nationwide network of contacts, enabling it to source equipment in just one or two days.

The formula has worked for Rob Wolfe, Vice President of Clearly Connected, a consulting and systems Integration Company based in Mountain View, which has purchased some Cisco equipment from Telecoast. “They had a very short lead time, a very fair price and the equipment was in flawless condition,” Mr. Wolfe said. Mr. Wolfe also added that he deals with upwards of 100 companies and has put Telecoast in the top half dozen, based on the condition of equipment, price, availability and the character of the company.
